Captains

I wrote this poem for my brother-in-law, Scott, who served 30 years as a firefighter/paramedic. He retired as a Captain. To all of the public servants, military personnel and others who live their lives in service to others, you have my deepest respect. These are not easy jobs. THANK YOU!

Captains
Jana Brock

There are captains of ships
and captains of teams
that serve our great country
and fight for our dreams.

The leaders and teachers
and kings, ruling far
that cannot compare
to the captain you are.

A hero in service
unlike all the others
you help falling strangers
and grieve fallen brothers.

Your hand there to give
to masses unknown
is steady and constant
in courage you’ve shown.

Know each friend and stranger
for whom you were strong
remembers you, captain
long after you’re gone.
